PhD position in Multimedia Information Retrieval

Context

Applications are invited for a PhD position in the field of multimedia information retrieval. The Viper group has a long research experience in Content-based Multimedia Information Retrieval (image, video, text, …), principally based on statistical approaches. Its activities have led amongst other results to the development of interactive demo systems for content-based video and image retrieval and multimedia handling. We wish to continue these activities, principally in the directions of:

  • multimodal information access, including:
    • multimodal data analysis
    • interactive learning
  • Large-sale multimodal information handling, including
    • construction of large-scale interactive frameworks
    • relevance feedback handling

The proposed post will be funded in the frame of a national project entitled “Machine learning strategies for adaptive multimedia navigation”. We target the development of both theoretically and practically robust solutions to comfort our excellent research position in the domain of multimedia information retrieval and exploration. We encourage very much collaborations and transparent solution development (through free software release, for example). In this context, experience in software development using object oriented languages (eg C++, Java) is highly desirable.

Candidates

Applicants must have a strong background in Machine Learning, Computer Science or closely related areas. The successful candidate will participate to the above described research topics in collaboration with the Viper group and will also be required to assist in the laboratory teaching duties.

Language

Good knowledge of English is mandatory as it is the base for scientific communication within our lab and in the research community. French is the spoken language in Geneva so some initial knowledge of French is beneficial; in addition the candidate must be willing to learn French in order to participate to departemental activities.

Application

Applications should include a curriculum vitae and two names for reference. The applicant should understand that the referees might be contacted. Applications by email are welcome (please start Subject by [VIPER-JOB]). Please send applications to:
