The Viper group of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Geneva is seeking

One Post-doctoral researcher in Information Retrieval and Machine Learning

The Viper group on Multimedia Information Management ( is part of the Computer Vision and Multimedia Laboratory. The Viper group initially specializes on visual information management and has now extended its activities on multimedia information management. This activity includes several complementary aspects along the chain of assisted content-based information management. We address the problem of content-based search and retrieval of multimedia data in relation with modern machine learning and data mining techniques. This is also related to our research on content characterization where we mixed automated characterization techniques and knowledge management and discovery techniques.

The Viper group is part of several national and European projects including the Swiss NCCR IM2 ( and the EU COST Action MUMIA ( The group is now chairing the Technical Committee 12 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR-TC12, “Multimedia and Visual Information Systems” It has co-organized the ACM International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (ACM-CIVR 2009, and the International Conference of the ACM-SIG on Information Retrieval in 2010 (ACM-SIGIR 2010,

The post-doctoral position is within the Swiss National Science Fundation (SNFS) NCCR IM2, active until end of 2013. Our group is co-leading (with EPFL) the sub-project on Integrated Multimodal Processing. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact closely with all partners of the NCCR.

The main focus of the post-doctoral position is on Machine Learning strategies applied to large-scale (Multimedia) Information Retrieval. Several PhD works are ongoing in the group on the topic and the successful post-doctoral candidate will closely collaborate with students and help in the guidance of their projects, while developing her/his own research.

There will be many opportunities to get involved into teaching on related topics and/or basic computer science courses, given in the department.

  • Completed PhD in Computer Science or Applied Math with strong CS background.
  • Experience with machine learning and/or information retrieval with a good publication record in a related topic;
  • good knowledge of data indexing and machine learning strategies and optimization algorithms;
  • Strong interest in parallel computation and algorithm complexity;
  • Programming experiences in either C/C++, Java, Python, Matlab;
  • Strong written and communication skills. Scientific representativity will be expected from the successful candidate;
  • Fluent in English
